The creative nature of the human imagination can lead to dangerous conspiracy theories

The Illuminati, the Zionists, the Bilderberg group and other such fringe organizations are among many trying to take over our world.

These institutions are small groups among many conspiracy theories floating around the Internet and elsewhere. Surprisingly, a lot of people believe these crazy ideas and will passionately argue about them. I've met intelligent and educated people that still believe in a conspiracy of some sort.

Recently, I heard Jay-Z and Kanye West were inducted into the illustrious Freemasons, and Barack Obama is an honorary member of the Bilderberg group (and quite possibly the antichrist). Rockstars and iconic pop figures are still trying to brainwash the youth and control their minds.

There are people who believe Tupac or Elvis are alive somewhere. There are too many theories to mention. Scouring the Internet I realized just how vivid people's imaginations can be, taking on an almost schizophrenic quality when you think about how elaborate and just downright stupid some conspiracy theories can be.

The danger is conspiracy theories can be used to justify hate. This is evident in the case of Nazi Germany and its use of the Jewish conspiracy stories to justify hate of the Jewish population of Germany at the time. Anti-Semitic sentiments and Jewish conspiracy theories are very old and were used as far back as the Spanish inquisition, all the way to the theory of the "Protocols of the elders of Zion."

The Web site "exposingsatanism.com" is dedicated to showing the public the subliminal ways in which Satanism has penetrated society. It breaks down how symbols in our everyday life can be satanic ploys to brainwash our children. The site criticizes everything from Harry Potter to Snakes and Ladders. They discuss other religious symbols like the Egyptian "ankh" as a Satanic symbol of hedonism and lust. The site claims Time Warner's logo is some kind of satanic symbol and Dungeons and Dragons is a tool of satanic manipulation and control.

What is it in our nature that feeds our need to live in a world full of shadowy, ominous figures plotting our demise? Conspiracy theorists exist in every shape and form. They can be found among the far left all the way to the far right. They are ubiquitous, existing in every nation. In the Rwandan genocide, conspiracy theories were at the heart of fear and hate for the Tutsi minority.

Theories all hinge on how some evil is conspiring to rule the world or corrupt the innocent. In early Protestant America it was anti-Catholicism and anti-Masonry. The Freemasons were, to early Americans and people in post-colonial countries, an embodiment of old European monarchy. Historian Richard Hofstadter says the Illuminati was viewed  as a libertine, anti-Christian movement, given to the corruption of women, cultivation of sensual pleasures and violation of property rights.

Conspiracy theory is a term used to identify the phenomenon in which people believe some secret military, religious, banking or fraternal organization is secretly running the world. This theme  has made Hollywood billions, and made authors like Dan Brown millionaires. These claims are almost always outlandish and unfounded. Think "X-Files" or Oliver Stone's "JFK."

These theories are almost always an attempt to make our lives more elaborate than they actually are. Conspiracy theorists like Senator Joseph McCarthy used people's fears to attack every left wing thinker in Hollywood and the political arena. His ideas were used to demonize people for having ideas that were radical in the eyes of some members of society.

The danger of these ideas is they skew our view of the world and of each other. The religious millenialists' greatest anxiety, according to Hofstadter, is always that we are living in the final days. Every calamity, war and great political/social upheaval is a sign of the end. The millenialists wants people to live in this sense of heightened fear and paranoia. This paranoia can then be used by some to endorse very drastic action by believers.

Think about cult members committing suicide because they believe the world will end. Their conspiracies are never small, but are of apocalyptic upheavals that could mean the death of whole worlds, political orders and human values.

In conspiracy theories, things become muddled because people are dealing in ultimate good versus ultimate evil. This means no negotiation is possible -- only the total extermination of one by the other. It's either the Freemasons take over the world or we destroy them.

The conspiracy theorist always has the upper hand and views him or herself as the oppressed. This is the same way the Ku Klux Klan viewed themselves -- as victims of a black conspiracy to take over the world.

We all need to open our eyes to the truth, which is that the world is a bit too big for any one group of people or person to rule. We also need to realize real life is very simple and no one is trying to brainwash you or your kids.

Hama I think it's time you got an education.

Per bloomberg news there is a secret banking cabal that controls the countries and the worlds economy.

Additionally we find John F Kennedy clearly warning we the people against a monolithic conspiracy that has amassed vast resources and kept their agenda secret through secret societies, not my words but JFK himself.

Ok, so it's pretty clear now that your probably wrong in your conclusions.

Bottom line is your being conned and it's time to wake up to who the real enemy is.

Oh and one last thing I don't want to destroy anybody or anything, I want people that are criminals to be investigated and get sent to prison.

@ the first commenter. did you actually read the article and speech you linked to? The AIG debacle is well known and the Administration should have known that AIG was not setup as a bank. It's and insurance and investment company period. So with all the money flowing through AIG, is it really a surprise that anonymous bankers have been in AIG shadows all this time.
And about the JFK speech. You did realize he was speaking to the Press directly and discussing communism as a threat and the need for official secrecy, while all the while internal transparency of his administration. The speech alludes to his growing concern of Communist Russia/Soviet Union. Their leaders operated in complete secrecy from their people and with out impunity. JFK was juxtaposing the American society to the Communists of that day.
The author is spot on in his conclusions. Unfortunately many people cannot function unless they are in crisis mode. hey have to believe that it's everyone else's fault or some secret cabal's fault that they cannot get ahead in life or for their own misfortunes. It is shameful how some will shirk all responsibility for their own or children's actions.
You need o wake up from your delusional state and forget the conspiracy and get involved in helping your local Church, homeless shelter, food pantry, etc. Do do something more constructive with your time and energy than cooking up these wild accusations and taking 50 year old speeches out of context.

There are so many fundamental flaws in your logic that it is just ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong, it's good that you bring up the topic and invite discussion, but you really need to get informed and exercise even a basic degree of logic before you try to represent your point of view.

They are too numerous for me to address right now, but I will point out *just one* of the massive fallacies in your argument:

a) no one is trying to brainwash you or your kids.

Yes. Yes they are. As a matter of fact there is a multi-million dollar advertising industry that pours ridiculous amounts of cash into researching how to brainwash my kids more effectively.

This is not even touching upon the multitudes of political organizations, military recruiters and every other cause imaginable that are attempting to brainwash my kids and yours.

Life is not all that simple, although it may comfort you to think so. And the notion that no one is trying to target the youth is simply laughable.

You are impotent as an advocate for point of view.

What is so pathetic about this article is its blatant disrespect and adamant insult to our justice system and history majors. If you study criminal history, you would know that conspiracies are not just common, they are human nature.

Fools and sorry ass morons in society like to simplify the complex human being because they want to view the world in a simplified way. Their delusional perception that everything is as it seems is why so many crimes can occur on Wall Street, let alone on the local level.

Oh yes, Hama, you enjoy believing that everything is as it seems and no one in the world has alternative motives.

WOW. This is actually so pathetic and sick I almost feel like I want to meet you in person just to look into whether you have children. You are not fit to be a competent parent and I do believe you are a danger to yourself and others around you.

What you fail to recognize is that you can take any topic and find a group of fringe lunatics who believe in something that can't be proven. Conspiracy theory is something that happens. In fact I wrote an article listing 33 of them that have been proven true, Hama, someone like you with your feeble little mind might need to actually read that coming from a journalist, documentary film maker and history major such as myself.

Here is the article you so desperately need to read:
http://www.newworldorderreport.com/Articles/tabid/266/ID/980/33-Conspiracy-Theories-That-Turned-Out-To-Be-True-Why-Do-So-Many-People-Not-Know-These.aspx

See, Hama, there is this little thing called ignorance. You don’t' want to demonstrate it so often because it can be used to discredit you. In this case, you ignorance to objectively look at conspiracy theories as a whole and realize that just because a few are wrong or hateful in their origins, doesn’t mean that all conspiracy theories are wrong.

This kind of circular reasoning you put fourth in your shameful display of an article and the filth you wrote on this website is EXACTLY what haters do. It is people like you, Hama, who actually make these loose connections and sidetracked arguments to attempt to discredit something by linking something unrelated to it.

By your logic, Hama, if a black man robs a bank, then all black men rob banks, right? Isn't this what you believe? Since one conspiracy theory out there hates jews, all conspiracy theories must hate people? Oh wait, no what you are saying is that if one conspiracy theory is delusional, like pink dragons, than ALL conspiracy theories are delusional, like dead hookers found in the trunk of a senator’s car.

Do us all a favor, Hama, and grow up. Give your readers a little more credit than this. Don't talk to them like thy are stupid, we all know you don't get it, but don't drag us down with your filth and shameful display of ignorance because you are enable to rationalize human behavior, which is one that historically and always has demonstrated conspiracy to defraud, to murder or to accomplish any alternative and criminal agenda.

Shame on you, Hama. Shame on you

Don't you find it ironic that you disclaim conspiracies with an example of the German Nazi party, an actual political conspiracy?

You are upset not about the possibility of a conspiracy theory being correct, but the wild variety of conspiracies with ridiculous conclusions. For example, is there group of argicultural companies that have conspired for decades to maximize corn production and sales that happened to use lobbies for high fructose corn syrup as a strategy to accomplish this goal? Very likely, yes? Was a corresponding rapid increase in American obesity rates an indended result of maximizing profits? Probably not, but to defend profit margins, such a "conspiracy group" will defend it tooth and nail, including funding fallacious research. Horribly inaccurate and inprobable? Figure it out.

Now let's add some nutjob interpretation where we inject space aliens, remnants of Nazi Germany or white supremacists. Things can get nutty fast and suddenly makes no sense because some half-wit decides to pretend like they know something. They don't know jack and their "conspiracy theory" shows that. Such nutty ideas could also be introduced by a real conspiracy to debunk the more serious and logical accusations. See? Conspiracy theories are ALL (irrational generalization) nuts!

As other commentors have pointed out, it's no surprise that conspiracies exist, but some people inflate them to ridiculous proportions. So what? Surprise? Stupid people exist!
