Weekend series has shades of the "Mighty Ducks"

This season, the Western Michigan Broncos and Bowling Green Falcons are doing their best impressions of the District 5 peewee hockey team, commonly known as the Mighty Ducks. As you may recall, District 5 served as bottom feeders of their league standings year after year, until their new coach, Gordon Bombay, was able to turn things around.

Unfortunately, the fictitious Bombay will not be making an appearance at the Ice Arena this weekend, nor will current Duck and former Falcon Dan Sexton. Instead, the young Falcon team comprised of mostly underclassmen, including 10 freshmen are left to take their bumps and bruises as they develop in front of all of our eyes.

The truth is, Bowling Green is 2-13-3-2 in the CCHA this season, with 11 points. The Falcons could be worse though. Western Michigan is just 2-11-3-1 this season in conference play with just 10 points. In fact, if you combined each teams points, they would still be in last place in the CCHA.

Believe it or not, the Falcons actually have a lot in common with District 5. If Scott Hamilton and other donors hadn't generously opened their checkbooks like Mr. Ducksworth did in the movie, Falcon fans would probably have to settle for watching the Mighty Ducks trilogy this weekend to get their hockey fix. Fortunately, we have two opportunities to watch the Falcons this weekend.

When the Falcons host the Broncos this weekend, both teams' records will be irrelevant.  They will be sure to entertain, perhaps as they did two years ago in a game that resulted in numerous highlights that can be found on Youtube.

On Jan. 18, 2008, the Falcons and Broncos faced off in a game that I will never forget. Bowing Green had just scored a second empty net goal to move ahead 4-1.  With just 12 seconds remaining an epic fight.

Blood, sweat and hockey gear covered the ice and left most fans in attendance with their jaws on the floor in disbelief of what they had just witnessed.

Once the referees convened, all 10 skaters on the ice were disqualified. Among those receiving majors for fighting and game disqualification's were current Falcon captain Kyle Page, alternate captain Tommy Dee, and Brian Moore. The fight resulted in a combined 207 minutes in penalties. BG finished with 87 minutes on 16 penalties, while the Broncos finished with 120 minutes on 23 penalties.

While I don't advocate the violence that took place that evening, I urge you to make your way to the Ice Arena this weekend because you never know what could happen in this battle of the bottom of the CCHA.

Hockey is a tough sport to play and our team is in the first year under a new coach. We should support our team instead focusing on shortcomings. The writer of this article should maybe suit-up and participate with the hockey team during one of their practices. I am sure that would give him some material for his next article titled "I Apologize for Comparing Our Hockey Team to the Mighty Ducks".

Maybe the person critizising the article should either a) learn to read, since he obviously didn't read it. The writer is obviously a supporter of the Falcon hockey team if he remembers minute details of an epic fight that happened 2 years ago, AND he's encouraging people to WATCH THE GAME.
b) Watch Mighty Ducks. Because the Ducks actually come back to win. The writer is stating that the Falcons may be in the same place right now, but they have the ability to come out of our bottom slump. How is it insulting to be compared to the MIGHTY Ducks??
